Lesson Title: Community Helpers
Overview of Lesson: This unit focuses on social learning through collaboratively working in small groups and incorporating opportunities for students to engage in the use of technology to gather and make sense of information, and to create their own final project. In this lesson we will focus on developing research skills and understanding the characteristics of community helpers and the role they play in the community. Students will use the internet to research community helpers and use Go Animate to create a video about a community helpers and their role within the community.
Time Required to Present This Lesson:  The unit of Community Helpers will span over two weeks. This class activity will last 2 “Language Arts” periods- approximately 60 minutes.
Curriculum Goals:
  • Identify roles and responsibilities of leaders within the community.
  • Demonstrate understanding of presentation software and how technology can promote creativity.

Intended Learning Objectives:
  • Students will be able to identify roles and responsibilities of leaders within the community.
  • Students will use the internet to research and gather information about community helpers.
  • Students will use the tool, Go Animate,  to visually show what they learned during their research.
Instructional Strategies that will be used during this lesson include:
Introduce the unit with a Go Animate video that I created highlighting 3 different community helpers (police, firefighter, post office worker) and their roles within the community.
Brainstorm using a KWL chart on the class projector (what I know, what I want to know, and what I learned) to access prior knowledge and form questions that students can address during their on line research about community helpers.
Class discussions about community helpers and how they make the community more successful. Invite a local police officer to Skype during the class discussion. The students will be able to ask questions of the officer about his roles and responsibilities.
Model how to look up books at the school library about community helpers. Guided and assisted reading of non fiction books about community helpers throughout the unit.
Use classroom computers to research roles and responsibilities of community helpers. Work with partners to gather information on the internet and discuss what they have learned.
Introduce YouTube and watch videos about the roles and responsibilities of different helpers in the community.
Use of  Technology by the teacher: The teachers will use the classroom computer to show the students how to search community helpers using Google and log in and create a video in Go Animate. The teacher will review the different parts of the computer, monitor, mouse and keyboard, modeling proper use.
Use of Technology by the student: The students will use the classroom computers, keyboard, monitor, and mouse to create search for information and create a video.
Preparation/Preliminary Activities: To prepare for this unit, I will provide books and materials/tools of common community helpers for the students to familiarize themselves with. I will make sure that the class has an account on Go Animate for video creation and sharing.
Procedure:
I will introduce the subject of community helpers by asking some questions and allowing the students to brainstorm and write down what they know. Who is a community helper? How do community helpers benefit us? We will make a list of the students' comments on the board. We will discuss doctors, dentist, post office workers, firefighters, policemen/woman, teachers, and others that the students list.
I will have students look back at the different community helpers on the list from the first discussion. The students will pick their favorite community helper and with a partner, research what that community helper does and their roles and responsibilities within the community. After gathering information, the student and their partner will work together to create a video using Go Animate. The video will star the student's favorite community helper, and explain what their job is and how they support/ help the community.
Assessment:
This lesson will be assessed by the students active participation in the class discussions
about community helpers.  The students will be assessed by successfully creating a Go Animate video about a
community helper.
